Gardeners Chelsfield is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our staff, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with garden maintenance, landscaping, use of machinery, and work on private and commercial premises.

Policy Aims and Scope

This policy applies to all work undertaken by Gardeners Chelsfield, including routine garden care, soft and hard landscaping, seasonal maintenance and any related activities. Our aims are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation, and promote a culture of safe working practices across our gardening operations.

Health and safety is a shared responsibility. Every employee, contractor and representative working for Gardeners Chelsfield must follow this policy and any associated procedures, risk assessments and method statements relevant to the task being carried out.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Chelsfield is responsible for providing clear leadership on health and safety. This includes ensuring that risks are identified and managed, that safe systems of work are implemented and that staff have the resources and information they need to work safely in gardens, outdoor spaces and associated areas.

Management will review this policy on a regular basis, and whenever there are significant changes in our work activities, equipment or relevant legislation. Any lessons learned from incidents, near misses or client feedback will be incorporated into future risk assessments and working practices.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and contractors of Gardeners Chelsfield must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. This includes neighbours, visitors, pedestrians, pets and other contractors operating on or near the site.

Staff are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment only as trained, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards promptly and cooperate fully with health and safety procedures. Unsafe behaviour, misuse of tools or ignoring agreed controls is not acceptable and may result in disciplinary action.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before undertaking work, Gardeners Chelsfield will assess the risks associated with the site and the tasks involved. This may include consideration of terrain, slopes, access points, underground services, overhanging branches, working near roads, water features, greenhouses, sheds and other structures.

From these assessments, safe systems of work will be developed. Where appropriate, method statements will be prepared, outlining the sequence of tasks, equipment to be used, control measures, emergency procedures and any client responsibilities, such as keeping pets and children away from work areas while operations are in progress.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Chelsfield will ensure that tools, machinery and equipment used for mowing, trimming, cutting, digging, spraying and other gardening activities are suitable for the task, well maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and legal requirements.

Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment and specialist machinery. Pre-use checks will be carried out, and any defective equipment will be taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced. Fuel, oils and other substances will be stored and handled safely, away from ignition sources and sensitive areas of the garden.

Personal Protective Equipment

Staff will receive guidance on correct lifting techniques and safe body positioning when moving soil, plants, paving, aggregates and equipment. Team lifting will be used for heavy or awkward items, and employees are encouraged to speak up if a task feels unsafe or beyond their physical capability.

Control of Substances and Environmental Care

Where horticultural products, fuels, cleaning agents or other substances are used, Gardeners Chelsfield will assess any associated health and environmental risks. Instructions on safe storage, handling, application and disposal will be followed carefully to protect people, wildlife and gardens.

We will always seek to use the least hazardous products that are effective for the task and will avoid contamination of soil, planting areas, water features and drainage systems. Waste such as clippings, soil, packaging and old fixtures will be managed responsibly and disposed of or recycled in a safe and lawful manner.

Working at Height and Site Access

Some gardening work may require working at height, for example when pruning trees, hedges or climbing plants. Gardeners Chelsfield will only undertake this work using appropriate ladders, platforms or access equipment and in line with recognised safe practices.

Access routes to and within the garden will be planned to reduce trip hazards and prevent unauthorised entry into active work areas. Caution will be taken when using equipment near pathways, driveways or public spaces to protect passers-by and vehicles.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Gardeners Chelsfield will investigate incidents to identify root causes and make improvements to prevent recurrence.

First aid provisions will be available during work activities, and staff will know how to respond in the event of an injury, fire, spillage or other emergency on site. Where necessary, emergency services will be contacted promptly and clear access will be maintained for their arrival.

Training, Supervision and Policy Review

Gardeners Chelsfield will provide appropriate training and supervision so that employees understand the hazards associated with gardening work and how to control them. New staff will receive an introduction to this Health and Safety Policy, and further training will be provided for specific tools, machinery or specialised activities.

This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains relevant to our gardening services and continues to reflect best practice in health and safety management. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and made available to clients upon request.
